REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Transmission

Tools Required:

Removal

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Mark the driveshaft so that it may be installed in the same position. Disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle circular companion flange. Slide the driveshaft off the transmission output shaft and install Extension Housing Seal Replacer T61L-7657-A into the extension housing to prevent lubricant leakage.
  1. Remove the four bolts retaining the catalytic converter. Remove converter.
  1. Remove the two nuts retaining the rear transmission support to the crossmember. Remove bolts.
  1. Support the engine and transmission with a transmission jack.
  1. Remove the two nuts from the crossmember bolts. Remove bolts, raise jack slightly and remove crossmember.
  1. Lower transmission to expose the two bolts securing the shift handle to the shift tower. Using a socket, remove the two nuts and bolts. Remove shift handle.
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the backup lamp switch. On 5.0L engines, disconnect NEUTRAL sensing switch.
  1. Remove the bolt from the speedometer cable retainer and remove speedometer driven gear from the transmission.
  1. Remove the four bolts retaining transmission to the flywheel housing.

CAUTION: Do not depress the clutch pedal while the transmission is removed.

  1. Move the transmission and jack rearward until the transmission input shaft clears the flywheel housing. If necessary, lower the engine enough to obtain clearance for transmission removal.

Installation

  1. Make sure that the mounting surface of the transmission and flywheel housing are free of dirt, paint and burrs. Install two guide pins in the flywheel housing lower mounting bolt holes. Raise the transmission and move forward on the guide pins until the input shaft splines enter the clutch hub splines and the case is positioned against the flywheel housing.
  1. Install the two upper transmission-to-flywheel housing retaining bolts snug, and remove the two guide pins. Install the two lower retaining bolts. Tighten all retaining bolts to 61-88 Nm (45-65 lb-ft).
  1. Using a transmission jack, raise the transmission until the shift handle can be secured to the shift tower. Install and tighten the retaining bolts and washers to 31-43 Nm (23-32 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the speedometer cable to the extension housing. Tighten the retaining screw to 6-13 Nm (54-115 lb-in).
  1. Using a transmission jack, raise the rear of the transmission and install the transmission support. Install and tighten retaining bolts to 68-95 Nm (51-70 lb-ft).
  1. With the transmission extension housing resting on the engine rear support, install the transmission extension housing support retaining nut. Tighten the nut to 34-48 Nm (26-35 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the backup lamp switch wiring harness. On 5.0L engines, connect NEUTRAL sensing switch to the wiring harness.
  1. Install the catalytic converter. Tighten the retaining bolts to 27-41 Nm (20-30 lb-ft).
  1. Remove the extension housing installation tool and slide the forward end of the driveshaft over the transmission output shaft. Connect the driveshaft to the axle circular companion flange. Ensure driveshaft index marks align. Tighten bolts to 95-130 Nm (71-95 lb-ft).
  1. Fill the transmission to 2.6L (5.6 pt) with Synthetic MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid E6AZ-19582-B (ESR-M2C163-A2) or equivalent.

NOTE: Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon® D8AZ-19554-A (ESG-M4G194-A and ESR-M18P7-A) or equivalent to the fill plug threads in a clockwise direction prior to installation.

  1. Install transmission fill plug. Tighten to 17-29 Nm (12-22 lb-ft).
  1. Lower the vehicle. Check the shift and crossover motion for full shift engagement and smooth crossover operation.
