Except Mustang Cobra

Removal

Refer to illustration following Control Assembly, Installation.

1. Place parking brake control in the released position and release cable tension as outlined.

2. Raise vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02.

3. Remove rear wheel parking brake cables from the equalizer.

4. Remove cable snap fitting from body. Remove retaining clip that attaches cable to underbody.

5. Remove rear wheelcovers, wheel and tire assemblies then rear brake drums. Refer to Section 06-02.

6. Remove the self-adjuster springs. Remove the cable retainers from the backing plates.

7. Disconnect the ends of the cables from the parking brake levers on the secondary brake shoes.

8. Compress the cable retainer prongs, and pull the cable ends from the backing plates.

Installation

1. Insert cable ends through backing plates and pull into the brake assemblies, until retainer prongs are securely seated in backing plate holes.

2. Connect the cable ends to the parking brake levers on the secondary brake shoes.

3. Install the cable retainers and the self-adjuster springs on the rear brake assemblies.

4. Position cable in the retaining clip, and screw it to the underbody. Secure the conduit to the body with the cable snap fittings.

5. Connect cables at the equalizer.

6. Install rear brake drums, wheel and tire assemblies then wheelcovers. Refer to Section 06-02.

7. Lower vehicle.

    WARNING: KEEP HANDS CLEAR OF CONTROL ASSEMBLY.

8. Remove lockpin from control assembly.

9. Apply and release control lever several times. Ensure that parking brakes apply and release and the BRAKE indicator lights when brakes are applied.

10. Install console. Refer to Section 01-12.

Cobra

Removal

1. Place parking brake control in the release position and release cable tension as outlined.

2. Raise vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02.

3. Remove rear wheel parking brake cables from rear brake calipers.

4. Remove trailing arm brackets.

5. Remove rear wheel parking brake cables from the equalizer.

6. Remove parking brake cables from tunnel bracket.

7. Remove parking brake cables from vehicle.

Installation

1. Install rear parking brake cables in tunnel.

2. Attach parking brake cables to tunnel bracket.

3. Attach parking brake cable ends to equalizer.

4. Attach trailing arm brackets to trailing arm.

5. Route parking brake cables through trailing arm bracket.

6. Attach parking brake cables to arm on rear brake calipers.

7. Install retaining clips on brake calipers.
