REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Driveshaft

Removal

  1. To maintain driveline balance, mark the driveshaft rear flange and axle companion flange so they may be installed in their original positions.
  1. Remove the four rear flange bolts and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle companion flange. Pull the driveshaft toward the rear of the vehicle until the slip yoke clears the transmission extension housing and seal. Mark the slip yoke index in relation to transmission output shaft during removal and temporarily install the appropriate plug in the extension housing to prevent lubricant leakage.

Installation

  1. Lubricate the slip yoke splines with Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent. Remove the plug from the transmission extension. Inspect the housing seal for damage; replace if required. Align slip yoke index mark with the transmission output shaft mark and install the driveshaft assembly. Do not allow the slip yoke assembly to bottom on the output shaft with excessive force.
  1. Install the driveshaft so the index mark on the rear flange is in-line with the index mark on the axle companion flange. This ensures original driveline balance. If vibration exists, refer to Section 00-04.

NOTE: When installing a new driveshaft assembly, align the factory made yellow paint mark at the rear of the driveshaft tube with the factory made yellow paint mark on the axle companion flange. If paint marks are not visible, refer to Section 00-04, Driveshaft Indexing.

  1. Tighten four axle rear flange bolts to 95-130 Nm (71-95 lb-ft).
