REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Wheel and Tire

WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY FROM VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A TRACTION-LOK AXLE, NEVER RUN THE ENGINE WITH ONE WHEEL OFF THE GROUND, SUCH AS WHEN CHANGING A TIRE. THE WHEEL STILL ON THE GROUND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO MOVE.

NOTE: Extended use of other than conventional spare tires on a Traction-Lok rear axle could result in a permanent reduction in effectiveness. This loss of effectiveness does not affect normal driving and should not be noticeable to the driver.

Removal

  1. Remove wheelcover as outlined. Loosen but do not remove, wheel lug nuts.
  1. Raise vehicle until the tire clears the floor.
  1. Remove wheel lug nuts as outlined. Remove anti-theft wheel locks if so equipped. Pull the wheel off the hub.
  1. If corrosion has formed around the center pilot hole so that the wheel cannot be removed by hand, use a wheel puller to remove the frozen wheel.

CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a frozen wheel because heat can shorten the life of the wheel and damage the wheel bearings.

Installation

  1. Clean all dirt and corrosion from the hub mounting surface and center pilot hole of the wheel. Apply a thin film of Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease D7AZ-19590-A (ESA-M1C172-A) or equivalent to the axle pilot flange to preclude corrosion.
  1. Place wheel on the hub. Install the locking wheelcover pedestal (if used) and wheel lug nuts. Tighten them alternately to draw the wheel evenly against the hub.
  1. Lower vehicle. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).

Tools Required:

Follow the instructions provided with Rotunda Tire Changer 104-00235 or equivalent.

Use the appropriate equipment and adhere to prescribed safety instructions to avoid damage to the tire and possible injury.

Do not remove the high-pressure temporary spare tire from the wheel. Do not service temporary spare.
