Section 04-02: Suspension, Rear | 1993 Mustang Workshop Manual |
The major components in the rear suspension system are: the suspension arms, coil springs, stabilizer bar (on some vehicles) and shock absorbers.
The rear axle is suspended from the vehicle frame by two short upper suspension arms controlling the side-to-side sway of the vehicle and two longer lower arms that manage the axle's forward and rearward movement.
Side-to-side sway is also controlled by the stabilizer bar, if so
equipped. On Mustang with 5.0L engine, two hydraulic dampers mounted rearward
from the axle bracket to the frame, control rotational forces during power
applications, braking and side-to-side movements.
Two coil springs are connected between the lower suspension arms and the frame. Each coil spring is mounted to an upper seat welded to the frame and a lower seat that is part of the lower suspension arm.
The other suspension parts linking the rear axle to the frame are the two shock absorbers. Both shock absorbers are mounted between the upper shock tower which is part of the floorpan and the two lower shock brackets welded to the axle tube.
CAUTION: Rear suspension fasteners are important parts because they could
affect the performance of vital components and systems and/or could result in
major service expense. They must be replaced with the same part number or with
an equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement
part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to ensure proper retention of this part.
