Cooling System—Filling

With Coolant Recovery

Coolant level cannot be accurately checked while the engine is running.

  1. Check all hose clamps for proper tightness. Ensure radiator draincock is closed.
  1. Place heater temperature selector in maximum heat position.
  1. For 2.3L engine, disconnect heater hose at outlet on thermostat housing. Fill radiator with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA (ESE-M97B44-A and ESE-M97B43-A) until coolant is visible at thermostat housing or radiator pressure cap filler neck seat. Connect heater hose and constant tension clamps.
  1. Fill radiator to below the filler neck seat.

WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE ENGINE WITH HOOD OPEN UNTIL FAN HAS BEEN FIRST EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.

  1. Leave radiator pressure cap off and run engine until thermostat opens (coolant flowing through radiator upper hose becomes hot).
  1. Stop engine and add coolant to radiator as necessary to adjust level. Install radiator pressure cap.
  1. Add a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water to the FULL HOT mark on the coolant reservoir or on bottles without caps, through the small opening at the top of the reservoir. Install reservoir cap, if so equipped.
