REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Fan Drive Clutch

 WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN HAS BEEN FIRST EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.

 

5.0L Engine

 

Removal

  1. Remove the shroud retaining screws, and lay shroud back over fan.
  1. Remove fan belt. Remove bolt and washer assemblies retaining fan drive clutch to water pump hub. Remove fan drive clutch and fan as an assembly at the same time removing the fan shroud.
  1. Remove retaining bolt and washer assemblies and separate the fan from the drive clutch.
 

Installation

  1. Position fan on the drive clutch. Install bolt and washer assemblies. Tighten to 16-24 Nm (12-17 lb-ft).
  1. Position the fan drive clutch and fan assembly, then bolt fan and clutch assembly to the water pump hub. Tighten the clutch retaining bolt and washer assemblies evenly and alternately to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). Install the fan belt. Refer to Section 03-05.
  1. Align fan shroud and adjust for equal fan-to-shroud radial clearance maintaining minimum of 0.38 inch radial clearance to fan tip. Install and tighten shroud retaining screws.


Typical Fan Drive Installation




 WARNING: NEVER REMOVE THE RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP UNDER ANY CONDITIONS WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM OR ENGINE AND/OR PERSONAL INJURY. TO AVOID HAVING SCALDING HOT COOLANT OR STEAM BLOW OUT OF THE RADIATOR, USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING THE CAP FROM A HOT RADIATOR. WAIT UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, THEN WRAP A THICK CLOTH AROUND THE RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP AND TURN IT SLOWLY TO THE FIRST STOP. STEP BACK WHILE THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM. WHEN CERTAIN ALL THE PRESSURE HAS BEEN RELEASED, PRESS DOWN ON THE CAP (STILL WITH A CLOTH), TURN AND REMOVE IT.
