DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Poor Heater and Defroster Performance

A low coolant level in the radiator can cause poor heater and defroster performance. (Any level below the neck is considered low). If this condition exists, perform the following:

  1. With cold engine, remove radiator pressure cap.
  1. With 50/50 mixture of specified coolant and water, fill radiator and replace cap. Observe the level of fluid in the overflow reservoir. Adjust 50/50 mixture of coolant and water to the FULL COLD mark on the coolant reservoir. Install reservoir cap, if so equipped.
  1. Start the engine and run until the thermostat opens.
  1. Shut off the engine and allow it to cool down. This permits coolant to be drawn into the radiator.
  1. Observe the level of coolant in the reservoir. The minimum level should be as specified in Step 2. If not, adjust coolant level by adding coolant.
  1. Check coolant level in radiator when engine has cooled. Radiator should be full. Add coolant if necessary. Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5.
